Hazardous Materials Worker Overview

Hazardous Materials Workers play a vital role in protecting people and the environment by safely handling and removing dangerous substances. In this specialized trade, you’ll identify, contain, and dispose of hazardous materials such as asbestos, mold, lead, mercury, and other biological or chemical threats.

Whether preparing buildings for renovation or responding to environmental concerns, Hazardous Materials Workers are trained to follow strict safety protocols and use advanced equipment to ensure every job site is safe for workers and the public. It’s challenging, important work that makes a real impact on communities and public health.

Skills & Abilities

The work is most rewarding for those who are safety-minded, detail-oriented, and take pride in protecting people and the environment. To be successful in their trade, Hazardous Materials Workers need:

  • The skills to read, write and communicate verbally

  • A good background in trade math

  • The physical strength and stamina required to work in protective gear for extended periods

  • The ability to lift in excess of 25 kilograms

  • Good attention to detail for following safety procedures and identifying hazardous materials

  • Manual dexterity for handling tools and equipment in confined or controlled spaces

  • The ability to work in enclosed or physically demanding environments

  • The ability to work alone or with a team

  • Computer skills are an asset
