DC17 Offerings
IUPAT District Council 17 offers an extensive range of SSPC skills training and certifications for Industrial Painters and allied trades through our training arm. These specialized programs are designed to increase jobsite confidence, safety, and competency - while meeting industry and site owner expectations for certification and technical ability.
Whether you're new to industrial coatings or looking to qualify for supervisory and high-skill roles, DC17 has training to support your development.
All programs are facilitated by certified Finishing Trades Institute (FTI) and third-party instructors.

IUPAT DC17 Plural Pump Training – Level 1 (Graco XP70 & EXP2i Reactor)
Description:
This DC17-developed course introduces members to the operation, startup, basic troubleshooting, and care of plural component spray equipment. It is not a spray technique course, but a technical introduction to pump systems for members working with complex coatings.
Length: 3–4 days (classroom + hands-on)
Enrollment: Limited to approx. 12 participants per session
Who Should Attend: Any member—no prior experience required
Future Levels:
This Level 1 course will be a prerequisite for upcoming Level 2 & 3 training on each specific pump system.
C1 – Fundamentals of Protective Coatings
Description:
This 40-hour course provides a comprehensive overview of protective coatings, corrosion prevention, and coating systems. It is broader than inspection-specific courses and ideal for anyone new to the industrial coatings field or seeking a structured refresher.
Exam: 100-question written exam
Recommended for: All Industrial Paint members
C2 – Planning & Specifying Industrial Coatings Projects
(Covered in depth under Supervisor Training)
C5 – Refresher for C3
Description:
A one-day refresher for individuals who have completed C3 training. Required annually for QP2 contractors and biannually otherwise.
Length: 8 hours
Exam: 25-question written exam
Recommended for: Anyone previously certified in C3
C3 – Supervisor / Competent Person for DeLeading & Hazardous Coatings Removal
Description:
Designed for supervisors on hazardous paint removal jobs, this 32-hour course covers compliance with safety and environmental regulations, hazardous material awareness (including lead and arsenic), and waste management. It prepares participants to plan and oversee high-risk coatings removal safely and effectively.
Exam: 100-question written exam
Recommended for: Supervisors involved in hazardous paint removal projects
Coating Applicator Specialist (CAS) Level 2 Exam
Description:
The CAS designation is rapidly becoming a required credential on industrial sites. This certification includes both a written and hands-on practical exam (blast & spray) that demonstrates your competency in line with SSPC/NACE Joint Standards.
Format:

Day 1: Half-day written exam
