Supervisor Training

DC17 Offers

IUPAT District Council 17 is committed to building strong leadership within the finishing trades. Our Supervisor Training programs are designed to support forepersons, lead hands, estimators, and tradespeople preparing for supervisory roles. Whether you're already managing teams or preparing to step into leadership, this training helps build the skills needed to lead crews, manage jobs effectively, and promote safety on site.

Supervisor training is available in-house and through recognized industry partners.

 

In-House Training

FTI Supervisor Training Program (STP)

Description: The FTI Supervisor Training Program is a two-day lecture and workshop designed for current or future supervisors and forepersons. It is ideally taught by two instructors—one from Labour and one from Management—to offer well-rounded perspectives. Labour instructors are sourced from the IUPAT across North America, while management instructors come from outside the participant’s local contractor network to avoid conflicts of interest.

Length: 2 days
Who should attend: Forepersons, supervisors, or any member preparing for leadership roles
Instructor: Finishing Trades Institute instructors

 

SSPC C2 – Planning and Specifying Industrial Coatings Projects

Description: C2 is not an introductory course. It’s intended for supervisors or experienced tradespeople who already understand the basics of protective coatings. This course provides the knowledge and tools needed to successfully plan, manage, and assess industrial and maintenance painting projects. DC17 has integrated this course into training for General Forepersons in the Industrial sector.

Length: 40 hours (may be offered over weekends)
Exam: 100-question multiple choice
Who should attend: Seasoned industrial painters with supervisory responsibilities or aspirations
Instructor: Finishing Trades and Third Party Instructors

 

LMCI Project Management

Description: This two-day workshop focuses on practical project management tools for the construction and finishing trades. It includes ~14 hours of online prep material to complete prior to classroom participation.

Length: 2 days (+14 hours online prep)
Who should attend: Office PMs, experienced tradespeople moving into supervision, or future business owners
Instructor: Dennis Doran (LMCI)
Cost: No cost to signatory contractors

 

LMCI Estimating

Description: A two-day estimating course developed by LMCI and instructed by Dennis Doran. This workshop gives participants a practical understanding of estimating in construction, with a focus on finishing trades.

Length: 2 days
Instructor: Dennis Doran (LMCI)

 

Outsourced Training

Leadership for Safety Excellence (LSE)

Description: LSE is a two-day course developed to help supervisors incorporate health and safety into their daily planning and jobsite practices. It is one of four courses required for a standard Certificate of Recognition (COR).

Length: 2 days
Who should attend: Supervisors and managers in construction and trades
