Painter Decorator Apprenticeship Training
Offered through Prairie Finishing Trades Institute (PFTI)
Welcome to the Painter Decorator Apprenticeship Training Program, proudly delivered by PFTI, the training arm of IUPAT District Council 17. This comprehensive program guides apprentices through all three levels of technical training required to become a Red Seal Certified Painter Decorator.
Whether you're starting your career in the finishing trades or looking to advance your skills, this program builds the foundation for long-term success in residential, commercial, and industrial painting.
Program Overview

Length: 3 Levels, each with 240 hours of in-class training (8 weeks, Monday to Friday)

On-the-Job Training: 1,300 hours per level

Tuition: $999 per session + $250 materials/textbook fee
(Currently sponsored for DC17 members working for signatory contractors)
Alberta Members: Completing each level of apprenticeship training is how DC17 members earn their next Union classification and access higher wage rates under their collective agreement.

Apprenticeship Requirements
This program is open to registered Painter Decorator apprentices with the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) program.
Entrance Requirements:

Minimum Grade 10 English & Math
or -
Successful completion of the AIT entrance exam
Apprentice Bluebook & Hour Tracking:
Apprentices must log on-the-job hours using the AIT Bluebook system. Bluebooks are issued upon registration and tracked through MyTradesecrets.

Saskatchewan:
DC17’s program is recognized by SATCC. Apprentices can attend training at PFTI in Edmonton and may be eligible for travel and financial supports.
Manitoba:
Manitoba apprentices should register with the Province of Manitoba and may complete training through Red River College.
