Health and Safety Training

DC17 Offers

IUPAT District Council 17 is committed to ensuring that all members working for signatory contractors have access to up-to-date health and safety training. Our goal is to protect workers, raise industry standards, and meet the specific requirements of job sites across Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Territories.

Training is offered in-house, online, and through trusted third-party providers. To enroll in any course or inquire further, please contact: Training@dc17.ca

In-House Health & Safety Training (Select Courses)

Available to members working for signatory contractors:

  • ESC Fall Protection

  • Standard Fall Protection

  • ESC Confined Space Entry Monitor

  • ESC Elevated Work Platform

  • Standard Boom Lift

  • Standard Scissor Lift

  • Lead Awareness Training

  • Lead Worker Awareness Training

  • WHMIS 2015 / GHS

  • H2S Alive

  • CSTS (Alberta) / SCOT (Saskatchewan)

Standard vs. OSSA Courses:
DC17 offers both standard and Oil Sands Safety Association (OSSA) versions of key safety courses. OSSA-certified training is required for work on oil sands sites and includes Fall Protection, Elevated Work Platform (EWP), and Confined Space Entry Monitor (CSEM).

For non-oil sands commercial construction, Standard training is typically sufficient. Not sure which you need? Reach out to training@dc17.ca.

Course Spotlight: Lead Worker Awareness Training

This course provides foundational knowledge on lead paint abatement, including:

  • Use of lead in construction

  • Health and environmental impacts

  • Contamination risks and decontamination protocols

  • Provincial regulations and best practices in the Prairies

WHMIS 2015

WHMIS 2015 incorporates the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System (GHS) and replaces WHMIS 1988. Members should ensure they are familiar with both systems, as many sites still recognize both.

Online Training Options

DC17 offers the following safety courses online — some with a required practical component upon completion of the theory portion:

  • Alberta CSTS (Construction Safety Training System)

  • Saskatchewan SCOT (Safety Construction Orientation Training)

  • Saskatchewan R&R (Rights & Responsibilities)

  • WHMIS 2015 / GHS

United Academy (Theory Online + In-Person Practical Required):

  • Boom Lift

  • Scissor Lift

  • Forklift

  • Telehandler

  • Fall Protection

Outsourced Training

Delivered through certified external providers:

  • First Aid – Emergency (1 Day)

  • First Aid – Standard (2 Day)

  • H2S Alive

  • BSO (Basic Safety Orientation)
BSO is the new in-class training standard, gradually replacing CSTS and OSSA regional courses on many sites. It is site-specific and increasingly in demand.
